Joint Dysfunction (TMD)

Your jaw and skull are joined by a moving, sliding joint called the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). The TMJ allows you to chew and speak; however, if the TMJ isn’t functioning the way it should, this can become difficult. When the TMJ is not working properly, it is a painful condition called Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMD).

You may notice some of the following symptoms if you have TMD:

  • Pain in the jaw
  • Persistent tooth pain
  • Issues with sinuses
  • Frequent headaches
  • Earaches
  • Pain in the shoulders and neck
  • A clicking sound in the jaw joint
  • Pain when yawning and/or chewing
  • Locking of the jaw

While these symptoms may be subtle in the early stages of TMD, they can get progressively worse with pain and symptoms increasing. In time, TMD can significantly affect your quality of life. At TCare Dental Centre, we help our patients by detecting signs of TMD by closely examining the teeth and gums as well as looking at the alignment of your jaw with an x-ray. Once we understand the severity of your condition, we will form a treatment plan to help with your unique case and symptoms.

TMD Causes

TMD can have several different causes, including injury, a misaligned jaw, arthritis, stress, anatomical problems, teeth grinding and clenching (bruxism) and more.

Bruxism is a condition in which someone excessively clenches their jaw or grinds their teeth. Bruxism can affect both children and adults alike and can afflict sufferers at any time of day. Often, bruxism results in headaches, jaw pain, tooth pain, damaged teeth and other dental problems.

TMD Treatment At TCare Dental Centre

TMD can be an extremely painful condition. Without diagnosis and proper treatment, your quality of life can be severely impacted. That’s why it’s important to visit a dentist you can trust to identify the signs of TMD early on and put a treatment plan together before the condition progresses too far.

Treating TMD

At TCare Dental Centre, we put together individualised treatment plans for each of our patients. We understand that no two people have identical experiences, and so there is no one-size-fits-all treatment plan for TMD. After diagnosing you with TMD, our dentists will put together a treatment plan that typically includes an occlusal splint, medication and physiotherapy and following the course until your symptoms have been reversed. With highly qualified, professional dentists treating your TMD, you will feel fast, lasting relief.
